Assessment Process

VisitEngland will conduct all assessments and judging for the purpose of the IWC English Cellar Door of the Year Award. Furthermore all entrants will be enrolled onto the VisitEngland Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme for 2018/2019 as part of their entry fee.

Full details of the assessment process are available below.

  • As an entrant of the IWC English Cellar Door of the Year award, you will receive a visit at some point after entering (but prior to the shortlist announcement date) from a VisitEngland Quality Assessor, who will take the perspective of a normal visitor and assess the experience they would have.

  • Your vineyard will be scored against eight key areas that align with the visitor’s experience of your business starting with ‘Pre-Arrival’, an assessment of your website, social media and leaflet, through to arrival on the day and then all the key features that your business offers: the vineyard experience, cleanliness, toilets, catering, retail, and the customer care, efficiency and knowledge of staff. You can find a detailed outline of the assessment process here.

  • Following the visit, the assessor will sit down with you to find out more about your business, how you are performing and any areas where VisitEngland would be able to provide support and assistance.  They will go through the findings of their visit and give suggestions and recommendations for how to improve, taking into account any limitations which you have as a business.  You will receive a comprehensive written report, including the scores awarded by the assessor, and if you achieve the required standard for accreditation, you will be able to use the VisitEngland Quality Marque on your website and other marketing materials.
